Writing for the Web—Exercise One

The websites I have chosen for this exercise are:
The Australian Red Cross
Oxfam Australia
Department of Families, Housing Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
Telstra
Optus

The main language differences between the charity websites and the mobile phone company sites is that the charity websites both tell a story on various projects they support. They contain a lot more textual information which is short, sharp and categorised in blocks of information. The mobile phone websites are more geared towards certain products, not much textual information is provided initially and a lot of hyperlinks have been used for the reader to drill into the website further. The language is quite informal and mostly contains short and sharp one line quotes.

Australian Government websites usually include links to other departments websites where as phone companies would never lead the customer to another phone company. Other topics that appear on Gov websites and do not on phone companies are: budgetary information, legislation information, fraud control information, parliamentary information and details of portfolio ministers.

The three different organisations all have differing purposes for the intent of use of their respective websites. Example, Gov websites are used to inform the public of services on offer to tem and to advise the broader Australian community about policy and program information. Mobile phone company websites sole intent is to gain a broader share of the market and to sell their products. Charity websites aim to raise their organisations profile and to gain support from the community in ways of funding and or volunteering.

The two Gov websites do differ in purpose as the two departments chosen are so diverse.

The sites tend to keep the readers attention by starting out with the most important information first and only offering a short statement on the topic. The reader is then tempted top go further into particular topics by following the links provided.

Gov audiences: ministers, Australian public, community organisations, service delivery agencies, Program Delivery Agencies, international gov departments, university students, future employees.

Charity audiences: business entities, crisis affected communities, international aid organisations, potential volunteers, sponsors, Australian public, sporting and community groups.

Overall, I think both the government websites use the most professional language.

Feature Article - Headline and Lead Sentence

From Baby Boomers to Generations X&Y…What’s the difference?

The battle continues, for many generations Baby Boomers have been struggling to understand and appreciate Generations X & Y, and vice versa. The differences between generations go far and beyond the use of language, technology, personal values and work ethics.

Demystifying some of the most common misconceptions and gaining an understanding of key differences which exist between generations will open new pathways to successful intergenerational communication.

Speech - The Importance of Setting Goals

· Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2009 Better Your Life Conference.

· I would like to take a moment to thank the organisers of this event; Jo Smith and Associates, for inviting me to be there guest speaker today. I will start by giving a short talk which will be followed by a questions and answers session.

· I once ran a workshop on goal setting in a QLD high school, where I was trying to emphasise the importance of setting goals to the students. At this workshop I went on to explain to the students that: the sky was the limit. To which one of the students responses was, ‘don’t tell me the sky is the limit, there are footprints on the moon’. Maybe we should start aiming for the moon…

· The following statement was made by Elbert Hubbard "Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage, but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal."

· Today, I am going to speak to you about The Importance of Setting Goals. Today, YOU can take positive steps in turning your life around by simply setting a few goals. Some of the reasons why it is important to set goals are:

· To have something in life to aim for. If we do not then our very purpose to life seems to be missing.

· To help us have more structure in our lives and feel like we are in control of our future.
· Goals are also a good way to measure our successes in life. They really are the essence of our past, present and future.

· TODAY, I want you all to take a positive step forward in your life and aim to set your selves three goals. Make sure you take some time out and consider what it is you actually would like to achieve and put a plan in place to help you reach the outcome you are hoping for. If things don’t go to plan, don’t be too hard on yourself - you are allowed to change your goals.

· This concludes my talk on the Importance of Goal Setting do you have any questions?

Martin Luther King Speech

This powerful speech incorporates most of the aspects we have learnt about in this module.

1. The speech has a clearly defined purpose which captures the audiences attention from the very beginning. The speech then goes on to reveal the main messaging. It ahs great structure which keeps the audience interested.

2. Martin Luther King (MLK) used a very simple example to explain a complex situation. By using the ‘bad check’ example in his speech, MLK was able to connect to a broader range of people. Therefore, changing a larger proportion of the populations thinking.

3. The audience was clearly defined, and the speech was written to covey relevant information to this selected audience. The speech not only gave an overview of the current situation, but it also gave positive messaging for the future. Most important the speech ended on a positive note.

Sponsorship Activity

Although the sponsorship proposal for The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) presents its statistical data extensively, I did not think they addressed all the points outlined in the checklist. More information could have been provided on the opportunity and background of sponsorship.

The Van Nationals proposal covers the checklist, however, in a very broad sense. No time has been invested in market research and they have not identified specific, measurable profit opportunities for potential sponsors.

They both are very different in language and structure. The ICAA has used factual information which is to the point and easy for the reader to understand. Both proposals have been written in a language aimed at each target audience, however, I did find reading the Van Nationals proposal a little irritating as it had spelling errors and had far too much background information and not enough facts. As a potential sponsor I was not too sure what I would gain.

I think the tired approach has been offered to allow sponsors who are willing to pay more have greater rights over the event. This gives organisations a broader exposure, ultimately leading to more profits.

The three places that Van Nationals can send this proposal are:

* Some of the local businesses in Geelong i.e. fish and chip shops, fast food chains or local mechanics.

* Car oil companies i.e. Valvoline, Shell, Mobil

* Tyre companies i.e. Bridgestone, Bob Jane

Vocabulary Exercise

Advice—somebody's opinion about what another person should do.
Advise—advice to somebody on a subject or course of action.

The man, who just had a car accident, came to me for some advice. After considering his claim, I suggested that I strongly advise he contact the police.

Aggravate—to make something become even worse or even more severe than before.
Irritate—to cause somebody to feel annoyance or exasperation, or cause annoyance or exasperation.

Complement—something that completes or perfects something else.
Compliment—something said to express praise or approval.

After going to a restaurant my friend said she really liked the wine, “It really complemented the food” she said. I took this as a compliment.

Spelling Exercise

My initial results before being able to check my answers were:
7 Incorrectly spelt words and 17 correct words.

I was extremely surprised to find that this was far from the truth. I always knew my spelling was not that great, however, I did not realise how much I depend on tools which facilitate correct spelling.

Of the 7 incorrect spelt words I identified, I correctly spelt 3. Shocking J.

Sentence Re-write

1. Due to the dedication and good work of the company staff, the project is going well. These continued work efforts are enabling the company to reach its goal of becoming a leading example of a team orientated workplace.

2. The demonstrated work of the team would provide further opportunities for the company to develop new business partnerships. One of the main concerns of these potential business partners was that targets were to be achieved whilst working to the set budgets.

3. According to her best friend Susan, her main aims in life were to become a successful writer, be a leader of opinion in the industry and the general community and dine with famous people. In addition, she also wanted to read and recast Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” in modern English. She wanted to achieve all this through living a free and generous life.

Police Jargon Exercise

1. At about 2:30pm, the male person got out of the suspected stolen car and ran in a north westerly direction. The male person was later seen within the area of Stuart Street in Griffith.

2. At approximately 3:00pm, police operations received a call from somebody at the communication centre to advise them that two male persons and one female person had escaped from the Belconnen Remand Centre. Members of the Belconnen Criminal Investigations Team and TIG are now investigating the matter.

3. At approximately 5:30pm, a female person was taken to the Canberra Hospital after having her bag snatched near the Ainslie Shops. The female person stated that the bag snatcher appeared to be in his early 20s, 6 feet 3 inches tall, of Aboriginal decent and wearing a blue shirt and black shorts. The bag snatcher was later found by police and taken to the city police station where he was put in prison.

Laws Affecting PR

I can see how all of these laws found on the Communications Law Centre website would be applied in the PR industry. More specifically, whether a PR consultant is preparing campaign material, writing speeches, preparing media releases or simply communicating internally most of these laws will need to be abided by. I found that most of the laws outlined on this website further compliment the PRIA Code of Ethics.

Roberta’s Ethical Dilemma

Based on the PRIA Code of Ethics, Roberta will need to act upon her findings. It is good that she has approached a senior member of management and she has tried to address the issue internally first. However, the cheques are still being written which only suggests that nothing has been done about it. Roberta should approach the senior manager again and follow up on her request from the previous time they spoke about this issue. If she is unsuccessful in making a change internally she will need to speak out about this issue as she in breach of ethic number 1.
Roberta will need to remain factual when raising issues with internal and external sources, making sure she does not bring any discredit upon herself, her employer or her clients.

At the end of the day, her company’s clients are living in houses which are simply not safe. Something will need to be done, to protect the safety and welfare of the broader community.

Lobbying and Government Relations, Exercise

This was an interesting PR example to view. It proves the point of having a small team managing and coordinating all the lobbying activities is far more effective than having a larger team doing this. From the beginning, the Wilderness Society had a strong, passionate and dedicated leader who had a sound understanding of what was required to gain maximum exposure of this issue to ultimately save the Franklin River.

The Wilderness Society used all three methods of lobbying thorough the course of this campaign. After failing to gain the outcome they were after through Direct Lobbying efforts with the Stet Government, they continued on with lobbying efforts by adopting the Grass Tops Lobbying method. A number of high profile politicians from around Australia joined the campaign and used their status to influence other community leaders of the same status. This raised the profile of the campaign to the next level and gained masses of media attention.

The lobbyists gained the majority of Australia’s support through Grass Roots Lobbying tactics, large non-violent protests were organised just before a Federal election, publicity was gained and most importantly the soon to be Prime Minister proceeded to make this an election commitment of the new government if people voted them in.

The Wilderness Society was extremely organised and went through all the motions required to gain a positive outcome. They not only stoped the dam being built but went on to have the legislation changed in the High Court to have the Franklin River listed as world heritage.

Sponsorship and Public Relations, Exercise

Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses

Overall this sponsorship proposal was my most preferred of the three provided. It’s presentation is not as professional as the other, however, all the important aspects of a sponsorship proposal have been addressed without the document being too onerous to read. The packages offered to potential sponsors are diverse which seem to offer a mutual benefit gaining opportunity for both organisations involved. I would be inclined to become a sponsor on the benefits of this proposal.

Fourth International Research Conference

This sponsorship proposal is way too long, there seems to be a lot of background information on the event organisers and the event itself, the information in this segment of the proposal offers to reader more information than they need. The document has loads of white spaces throughout. Overall the language used in this proposal could have been more user friendly and a spell check should have been performed before it went to print. The sponsorship packages offered seem to be reasonable, and plenty of options on offer. I particularly like how they also offer packages by negotiation, however, this could become quite time consuming in pressured environments.

2007 Spring Festival

Likewise, this proposal is quite lengthily and onerous to read. The information provided within the document is not very informative and leaves a lot of information to be guessed by the reader. I would have also liked to of seen a sponsorship application attached, instead of the potential sponsor having to contact Willoughby Council for further instructions. Overall, the presentation of information in this proposal leaves the impression that it is a privilege to be a sponsor and very one sided befits. This proposal could have been more personal by simply replacing references to “YOUR COMPANY” with individual business names.

Using an embargo on a media release.

Working effectively with the media is critical to being an successful public relations officer. When we discuss working with the media in class, the issue of embargoes - how to use them, when to use them - often comes up.

This contentious topic has hit the headlines recently with complaints from a Melbourne-based PR officer that a media outlet knowingly and deliberately broke an embargo on a media release she sent out.

Check out the PRIA coverage of the story: http://www.pria.com.au/resources/list/asset_id/295/cid/350/parent/0/t/resources/title/PR%20Information%20Report%20December%202008 , and also the Crikey report: http://www.crikey.com.au/Media-Arts-and-Sports/20081118-Embargo-etiquette-MX-screws-homeless-people-to-get-the-scoop.html

What are your thoughts?
